- 0.6 mm – 0.6 mm across at the link, very fine for a chain - finer than a dime is thick, and a dime is only 1.35 mm. Takes a pendant bail of about 1 mm or wider.
- 0.65 mm – very fine: the links run 0.65 mm across, thinner than a credit card, which is 0.76 mm. Takes a pendant bail of about 1.1 mm or wider.
- 0.8 mm – very fine: the links run 0.8 mm across, a little thinner than a U.S. dime laid flat (1.35 mm). Takes a pendant bail of about 1.2 mm or wider.
- 0.9 mm – 0.9 mm across - a very fine gauge, a little thinner than a U.S. dime, which is 1.35 mm thick. Takes a pendant bail of about 1.3 mm or wider.
- 1.4 mm – a fine chain at 1.4 mm across - about as thick as a U.S. dime laid flat (1.35 mm). Takes a pendant bail of about 1.8 mm or wider.
- 1.8 mm – a light necklace at 1.8 mm across - about as thick as a U.S. quarter, which is 1.75 mm thick. Takes a pendant bail of about 2.2 mm or wider.
- 2.2 mm – a light necklace at 2.2 mm across - a little over the thickness of a U.S. nickel (1.95 mm). Takes a pendant bail of about 2.6 mm or wider.
- 3 mm – 3 mm across at the link, medium for a necklace - about as thick as 2 pennies stacked (a penny is 1.52 mm). Takes a pendant bail of about 3.4 mm or wider.
- 3.25 mm – 3.25 mm across - a medium gauge, about as thick as 2 pennies stacked (a penny is 1.52 mm). Takes a pendant bail of about 3.6 mm or wider.
