- 2.2 mm – a chain of 2.2 mm - light, and a little thicker than a U.S. nickel, which is 1.95 mm thick. Takes a pendant bail of about 2.6 mm or wider.
- 3 mm – 3 mm across - a medium gauge, about as thick as 2 pennies stacked (a penny is 1.52 mm). Takes a pendant bail of about 3.4 mm or wider.
- 3.7 mm – a necklace of 3.7 mm - medium, and roughly 2 stacked pennies deep, a penny being 1.52 mm. Takes a pendant bail of about 4.1 mm or wider.
