- 0.5 mm – 0.5 mm across - a very fine gauge, finer than a dime is thick, and a dime is only 1.35 mm. Takes a pendant bail of about 0.9 mm or wider.
- 0.6 mm – 0.6 mm across at the link, very fine for a chain - thinner than a credit card, which is 0.76 mm. Takes a pendant bail of about 1 mm or wider.
- 0.8 mm – very fine: the links run 0.8 mm across, a little thinner than a U.S. dime laid flat (1.35 mm). Takes a pendant bail of about 1.2 mm or wider.
- 0.9 mm – a very fine necklace at 0.9 mm across - a little under the thickness of a U.S. dime (1.35 mm). Takes a pendant bail of about 1.3 mm or wider.
- 1 mm – a fine necklace at 1 mm across - a little thinner than a U.S. dime laid flat (1.35 mm). Takes a pendant bail of about 1.4 mm or wider.
- 4 mm – a necklace of 4 mm - substantial, and about as thick as 3 pennies stacked (a penny is 1.52 mm). Takes a pendant bail of about 4.4 mm or wider.
