How to Choose a Gold Chain: Length and Width Made Simple

A gold chain is one of the few pieces people wear every day for years, so it is worth getting two numbers right before you buy: the length, which decides where the chain sits, and the width, which decides how it looks and what it can carry. Here is how we help customers choose, in plain terms.

Start with length: where should it sit?

Chain length is measured end to end, clasp included. The same chain sits a little differently on everyone, so treat these as starting points rather than rules.

    • 16 inches: sits close, around the base of the neck on most women. A good choice for a small pendant you want to show above a neckline.
    • 18 inches: the most popular length for women. It falls at or just below the collarbone and works with most pendants and necklines.
    • 20 inches: a little below the collarbone on most women, and close to the base of the neck on many men. A common starting length for men.
    • 22 inches: around the collarbone on most men. A favorite men's length for a chain worn alone or with a cross or medal.
    • 24 inches and longer: sits lower on the chest. Good for a larger pendant, for wearing over clothing, or for layering under a shorter chain.

An easy way to check before you order: lay a piece of string around your neck where you want the chain to rest, mark it, then measure it flat against a ruler. If you are between two lengths, the longer one is usually the safer choice for a pendant, because the pendant's weight pulls the chain into a slight V.

Then width: delicate, everyday or bold

Width is measured across a single link, in millimeters. A millimeter sounds small, but on a chain it makes a real difference.

    • Under 1 mm: very fine, for small pendants and a barely-there look. Lovely, but treat it gently.
    • 1 to 2 mm: the everyday pendant range. Fine enough to look delicate, sturdy enough to wear daily.
    • 2 to 4 mm: noticeable on its own. A good range for a chain worn without a pendant, and a common choice for men.
    • 4 mm and up: a statement chain. Bold on its own, and well suited to a heavier pendant.

Proportion matters too. A wide chain looks heavier on a slim frame, and a very fine chain can look lost on a broad one. If you are buying a gift and are not sure, a chain between 1.5 and 2.5 mm is a comfortable middle ground for most people.

Matching a chain to a pendant

If the chain will carry a pendant, look at the bail, the small loop at the top of the pendant. The chain and its clasp have to pass through it, so the bail opening needs to be a little wider than the chain. Most of our chain pages list the smallest bail each width will fit, which takes the guesswork out of it. As a rule of thumb, keep the two in scale: a fine chain for a small charm, a sturdier chain for a larger cross or medallion.

    Picking a chain style

Once you know the length and width, the style comes down to the look you like:

    • Cable: simple round or oval links. Classic, versatile and a natural pendant chain.
    • Box: small square links with a clean, smooth line. A favorite for pendants.
    • Rope: twisted links that catch the light from every angle and look richer than their width suggests.
    • Figaro: a pattern of short links with a longer link between them. A traditional look many men love.
    • Curb: flat, interlocking links that lie close to the skin. A strong, simple classic.
    • Paperclip: long, open rectangular links. Modern and easy to layer.

    Layering chains

To layer, space the lengths about 2 inches apart, for example 16, 18 and 20 inches, so each chain has its own place. Mixing widths helps too: a fine chain next to a slightly bolder one looks deliberate rather than tangled.

    Bracelets follow the same idea

At the wrist, measure with a strip of paper and add about half an inch for a comfortable fit. Most women wear a 7 to 7.5 inch bracelet and most men an 8 inch one, and many of our chain styles also come as gold bracelets, so a necklace and bracelet can match.
